Islam and Ways of Optimizing Consumption

Abstract

One of the basic features of the economic school of Islam is the prohibition of prodigality and combat against consumptionism. This trait of the Islamic economy separates it from the capitalist economic system and materialist economic schools. Islam has strongly condemned and reproached prodigality and lavishness in procuring animalistic pleasures, and it is for the same reason that allocating income for meeting legal needs and consumption facilities should not have marked difference with the living standards of the general public to such extent that it is considered according to custom to be a lavish and aristocratic life. In fact, a consumption pattern should be institutionalized in the Islamic society which is characterized by moderation, contentment, public welfare and sustainability of consumption for all the generations. This article endeavors to delve into the ways of optimizing consumption according to Islamic perspective. In order for the Islamic society to attain this economic objective and to know its duty in the consumption area, it should identify the contributors and participants in this system with the duty of every contributor determined and defined.
