Utopian Society in the Political Thoughts of Farabi and Plato

Author

Abstract

This article aims to compare between Farabi’s political thought and that of Plato (utopian society). First, the article provides a short account on Farabi’s life and the elements effective in shaping his scientific personality. Also, the nature of politics has been analyzed and explained in detail according to Farabi’s political thought (In fact, a comparison between Farabi’s political thought and that of the ancient Greek philosophers has been made). The first thing that brings Farabi and Plato, the leader of philosophers, closer to each other is that each one of them puts forward political views and ideas in the world for the first time. Both Farabi and Plato were of the opinion that the solution of the problems of a civil society was related to the solution of man’s attitude towards politics. Thus, the philosophic efforts of both of them were made towards reintroducing politics, the only element of consolidation of the warp and woof of men’s social life. They redefine politics on the basis moral foundations linking it with the eternal celestial world. “Utopian society” has been defined according to both philosophers and the differences and similarities between the two definitions have been highlighted and discussed
